A couple of years ago, my boys introduced me to the board game Catan. It was here that I really feel I love with the German or Euro style board games. Catan is a great family game and is relatively easy to learn. Our family has enjoyed playing the game and definitely will continue to do so. The goal of Catan is earn a set number of victory points by collecting resources and building settlements on the tiny island. Your opponents are trying the same thing so some strategy is needed. Catan If you are looking for a great game for the family or friends, then I highly recommend Catan.
One of the main drawbacks of any board game is the setup and cleanup. That is why I really enjoy Catan and many other board games on the iPad and Android. Easy to transport, setup, and all you have to do is push a button to cleanup! So what is currently available to Catan lovers with an iPad or an Android device.
1. Catan: The basic game is available for both Android and iOS. In the basic version of the game players can play against the computer or pass and play local players. The game comes with numerous in app purchases, such as the expansions The Seafarers, and Cities and Knights.
Note: Catan HD – is specifically for the iPad.
2. Rivals for Catan: This the electronic version of the Catan card game. This game is currently only avaible on iOS. The gam comes with single player and multiplayer games (via the Game Center). I have not played the actual card game but I really like this version of Catan. It adds some nice variety to game.
3. Catan Game Assistant: While this is not a game, it is a nice app you can use to help learn how to play Catan. When I first got into playing Catan, this app did not exist, I wish it had. It definitely answered some of the questions I remember having when I first started playing.
4. Catan for the Computer: This is a somewhat new addition to the Catan electronic family. This is the basic Catan game for your PC. Overall it has same features you would find in the Android or iOS games. The game plays well and has some really neat features for Catan players. The game comes with The Seafarers, and Cities and Knights, you can change the difficulty settings, you can play online with others, and even keep track of your statistics. The part of the game I really enjoyed with the Editor. Here you can create your own Catan board and even play other custom made scenarios. The editor will take a bit to get used to but if you enjoy making games, well now is your chance.
Finally, I am happy to report that Catan Online is currently in beta. I was asked to be a testor for the new online multiplayer option for Catan. This is one of the major features players have been asking for, well it is coming. My understanding is that it will come to Android first and then iOS. Players will be able to create an online profile in the game and then play against others. It will be neat to see when the first version is done. (I will keep you informed).
So are you a Catan player? If not did I peak your interest? Like I said before, Catan is a great family game so why not give it a try.
