Inkle Studios, the producer of the Sorcery! interactive story apps has launched 80 Days for iOS.
From the official site: 80 Days takes you on a real-time race around the world set in a re-imagined steam-punk version of the Victorian era. With a massive script of around 500,000 words and more than 10,000 choices to make, every player is guaranteed to experience their own unique story during each round-the-world voyage.
Besides giving players the ability to choose their path — which of 150 cities to visit, how to get there, which subplots to pursue, etc. — 80 Days also has a live feed that shows all players’ progress in real time.
- Plan and strategise – can you find the fastest route?
- Flexible interactive narrative with thousands of choices
- Explore an entire 3D globe, with 150 bespoke cities to visit
Now my take: This is an awesome game and if you enjoyed Sorcery! then you will definitely want to play 80 Days.
The game is based on the story, Around the World in 80 Days. You will be working with Phileas Fogg where you will attempt to circum-navigate around the world in 80 days. In this game, you will choose the direction you go, based on the decisions you make. As you make decisions, new routes will open up. As with any interactive story, the majority of the time is reading and decision making. It might sound boring but it is not!
In addition to reading and making decision, 80 Days have a few more things for you to consider. First off, you will have a suitcase that you will need to pack items; these will be used on the trip. You will also need money. You start out with some but will need to earn more along the way. Finally there is Fogg’s health you need to keep an eye on
As you arrive in the different cities, you can do a number of things such as visit the bank, market, explore the city, or depart and keep moving forward. In the market you can get more suitcases and items and in the bank get some money for your trip, assuming they are open.
The game is very enjoyable and will keep you coming back. I have not yet finished my race but I am moving forward. The graphics are beautiful and the game interface very easy to use. This is a game to enjoy over the long term and one that needs to be savored.
