An excellent Tetris like game with lots of game play options.
When I was growing up, Tetris was one of the first video games I ever played. I would play this game for hours. As the years passed, I moved away from Tetris and got into other puzzle games. Well it is time to come back to it with Cubx from T&T.
Cubx is currently free on Google Play and will shortly be out for iOS devices. As the game is free, it is supported with a small ad across the top of the screen but this does not interfere with the game at all. [Update- get it here for iOS]
If you know how to play Tetris, then you understand the general goal of Cubx. Blocks will be falling down and you will need to arrange them on a bar to form lines and then when a line is complete it will be removed and you earn points. If you cannot clear the blocks quick enough, then you lose.
But what makes Cubx different from Tetris? Well a couple of things. First, blocks come from the top and bottom of the screen and second, the bar they land on, you can move around the screen to help line up and catch the blocks. This adds a really neat dimension to the game and definitely keeps you on your toes! Check out this demo videos to get a feel for gameplay.
The game is well designed with a nicely done interface, high res graphics, and a built in tutorial to help you get started. The game connects to Google Play for leader boards.
Cubx comes with the following game modes:
- Classic
- Cubx
- Arcade – start off with some miscellaneous blocks already on the block
- Time Trial – got to deal with a timer too
- Contract – must do what the game asks
- Missions – over 120 different missions or goal oriented levels
In addition to these different game modes, you can unlock and use 4 boosters:
- clear the entire screen
- clear the upper part of screen
- clear the lower part of screen
- remove residues
I am still working through all the different options but these add a lot of variety to game, so it never seems to get old! The one thing I have learned by playing Cubx is patience. I have messed so many games by moving the bar all over and not being patient and let the bricks come to me. You need to plan your moves and rotate the bricks to fit in properly. Being able to move the bar and having bricks coming form both directions adds to the challenge. I will not tell you what my high score is. 🙁
I really like the game-it is fun to play, there are tons of options (my favorite so far is the classic mode), and it is a game that will keep you busy for hours. Cubx provides a great twist on a classic game and entertains. With a price tag of $0.00 USD, there is no reason not to give it a try.
