I am in my car a lot and thus cannot always easily take down notes. I have played around with a number of different recording apps but I must say I am impressed with Smart Recorder/transcriber from Roe Mobile Development LLC . This free iOS app works well and has a lot of nice options to it. As a side note, there is a small ad on bottom of screen.
This app is definitely for anyone who wants or needs to create audio notes and then play them back later or transcribe them. I would recommend trying the app first and then look into the various upgrades that are available via in app purchases (IAPs).
To use the app, it is simple. Simply tap the big record button and begin speaking. When you are done, tap stop. Once the recording is done you can save it and begin another or get into the neat options in this app.
The power behind this app is those features and settings. Since the settings are free, I will touch on those first.
Settings:
The app comes with a series of tips which you will see each time you turn on the app. You can turn these off if you like.
- All recordings can be sorted by category, meetings, classes, memos
- All recordings can be sorted by name, date, length
- You can modify a number of settings such as:
-Sampling rate
-AP threshold
-Noise filter
Overall there are quite a few things you can do if you made to really tweak your recordings. After you make your recording, you can send it off to have it transcribed if you like. There is a fee involved with this option.

The app has a great number of features to allow you to create some very high quality and complex recordings. For the average user, I am not sure how many of these he will need but it is nice to have them available. I am not going to get into great detail, since I think the listing alone should give you a good idea of what they do.
