Did you ever want to make phone calls on your iPad or Android tablet? Do you make a lot of international calls? Well with iPlum, you can do just that. iPlum is a free app, for both Android and iOS users. This app is a phone and text messaging app that run over your existing data connection- either LTE or wifi.
Now the app does not replace your current phone, it simply is another dialer on your phone. For those devices that do not have dialer, such as a tablet, now you have a phone! 🙂
The app is simple to use. First you will need to download the app (see the market links below) and then create an account. There are two way to use iPlum-making calls to other iPlum users and making calls to non-iPlum users.
If you call another iPlum user then you have:
- free unlimited calling
- free unlimited texting
- 30 Free credits for global calling
If you call anyone outside of the iPlum network, then you have:
- purchase a US phone number which will run you $1/month
- purchase credits to make additional calls.
- all of the same features when you call other iPlum users.
If you go to the iPlum website, you can see all of the specifics. The developers have done a nice job and provides answers to all key questions.
The app interface is clean and pretty straight forward to use. Â You can see the screenshots below but if you know how to make a phone call or text you know how to use the app.
The app is a nice way to add a phone to your tablet inexpensively. Now if you get a few of your friends together and all create iPlum acccounts, you can call for free over WiFi. Now with all carriers basically just charging for data and providing free texting and calls, I am not sure if the app is worth it.
After reviewing the information from the developer, I would think iPlum would be best for
- those that do not have a phone or standard data plan but want to make occasional calls
- those that need to make international calls- they claim their rates are low but I could not verify this
- those who want a second number for business or private use
iPlum is free to try. Also there are no long term contracts so you cancel at anytime. I do not want to sound like an ad since this is an app review but I see this more of a service with an app.
