Over the last year, I have enjoyed playing League of Legends with my kids so when MOBA type games came to mobile devices, I wanted to take a look. I did a post last November, outlining some currently available MOBA games for both Android and iOS.

Right now I would say Vainglory is the probably the biggest or most play one on mobile. The game is fun and well done. There were a few things that I do not like about it:

  • it is a huge (1+ GB) app
  • games take about 30 minutes to play
  • hard to play on smaller screen

Do not get me wrong, I really enjoy Vainglory (that is for another post) but last year I was given early access to Spacetime Studio’s Call of Champions. I was very impressed with it; the alpha build was great. After that initial look, I had not played it very much. Last week I decided to pick it back up and I am glad I did.

Quick Summary:

Call of Champions is a 3 vs. 3 game that lasts only 5 minutes. Your job is to destroy your opponent’s turrets and base. If you don’t destroy the base, the team with the best statistics wins. There are 15 different champions broken down into eight different realms.

The game is free to play, with no ads. You start with a few champions, but every day there is an additional free champion that you can play and try out. As you play you earn coins, which can be used to purchase champions. You can also purchase platinum (IAP) to purchase champions or a premium membership. Being a premium member helps you earn coins and experience at a faster rate.

What I like:

  • Games being only 5 minutes makes it extremely easy to play whenever and wherever you
  • The app only takes up about 100 MB space and plays well over Wi-Fi or data
  • A nice variety of champions and different skills
  • You can level up your champions and earn new new talents
  • User interface is very simple and works well on both small and large screens

What I would like to see improved:

  • Better team selections when playing solo
  • Better in game communications
  • 400,000 coin for a new champ will take some time to earn, maybe some sales or lower price
  • More players and a more active community

I recently reached out to the company and after an initial email, I have not heard back from them. When I do I will let you know.  If you read their forums, you will see quite a number of posts regarding the future of the game or rather “is there a future for this game.”  The game has not been updated since December 2015 and the developer has not been very active on its own forums. Also not hearing back from the developer myself, also has me wondering about the game.

This game has a lot to offer: casual games, ranked games (after level 5), you can unlock extra talents, such as movement speed, cooldown reduction  etc while all skills are available when you first start the game and there is not a huge time commitment.

Check out the video below and see if this MOBA is for you.  If and when I hear back from the developer, I will let you guys know.
